About Us

Welcome to the Lighting Bug website!

Lighting Bug is an expanding family run business, with over 50 years’ experience in the lighting industry. The showroom displays high quality lighting to suit all budgets, and probably contains the widest selection of lighting in Wiltshire. There are over 2000 fittings on display, and more can be browsed in catalogues. Fittings chosen from the catalogues can be ordered from our suppliers, which include: Där, Franklite, Searchlight, Endon, David Hunt Lighting, Illuminati, Paul Neuhaus, Oaks, and many more.

Lighting Bug was established in 2003 by Brenda Savill, the present Managing Director. However, her introduction to the lighting business commenced as a teenager when her father was out of work in the 1960s. To earn some money for his family, he innovatively created an assembly line in the kitchen of their home to make children’s bed-side lamps. Father, mother and the 3 school-aged children were all involved in the manufacture of the lamps which had rather cute fuzzy foxes sitting on them. He then touted the lamps around local electrical shops. They were so popular that he was able to move the fledgling business into a factory and then, adding a range of light-fittings, opened a succession of showrooms in the Midlands. Although always interested in her father’s lighting business (which included her 2 younger brothers), Brenda chose an alternative career until 2003. Using business acumen gained in other organisations, combined with practical support from her family, she launched Lighting Bug Swindon in August 2003.

Initially, just two of the present business units were utilised for stock and a showroom. As the business grew, a third unit was acquired in 2007. This allowed the stock to be moved into the 3rd unit and the showroom to expand into approximately 5,000 sq ft.

Whilst most of Lighting Bug’s business is focussed on the needs of private customers, another crucial element involves collaboration with and the supply of light fittings and electrical hardware to the ‘trade’ through architects, designers and electricians. Based on site visits, Brenda provides advice and costs regarding projects and housing developments.

Lighting Bug and its customers greatly benefit from the extensive knowledge and experience of loyal staff; many have worked in the showroom in excess of 10 years. They include a mix of full, part-time, and a student Saturday worker, who are willing to work flexibly as customer-demand changes. The staff are clearly appreciated; being frequently thanked and praised by customers, check out our Google reviews to see for yourself!

In 2016, Joanne Savill, a next generation family member, was welcomed to the team and she is currently developing the on-line aspect of the business, whilst also playing an important role in the running of the showroom. Brenda and Joanne regularly visit suppliers, to review their latest products, in order to update the choice of fittings on the Lighting Bug website and in the showroom.

The continuing development of the website and on-line business is very important to Lighting Bug, although many customers value the ability to visit our showroom, view the products in ‘real-life’, and to discuss their ideas and needs with the staff. Our showroom provides customers with inspiration for their homes, and we are aware that some customers travel substantial distances to visit us.

In addition, we are David Hunt Brand Partners, which enables us to work exclusively with them to provide a high level of customer service and support. Our expertise is further advanced with regular training provided by David Hunt Lighting. Within our showroom we have a large selection of their light-fittings: displaying their vast range of designer styles; varied finishes and colour options. Customers can thereby select high quality, bespoke fittings which suit their specific requirements.

The Lighting Bug website compliments the showroom and was designed exclusively with you, our customers, in mind. It enables you to view, at your leisure, an amazing array of luminaires.

If you browse the website prior to visiting the showroom, please be mindful that not all fittings on the website are displayed in the showroom and prices may also vary. So, if you wish to view a particular product in the showroom, please contact us before your visit to ensure that it is available and on display. Remember, there will always be additional inspiration by visiting in person, which we highly recommend. Our showroom is wheel-chair friendly, has plenty of free parking and staff are happy to carry goods to customers vehicles’.

We pride ourselves in providing an extensive lighting range to suit every taste, design and pocket, with an even wider range available to be ordered from manufactures. If being ‘green’ is a priority to you, we offer a wide choice of low-energy LED lamps from stock. If you need a replacement part, we will do our best to locate one. Our knowledgeable staff are always happy to help you find the right lamp and light-fitting for every part of your home or garden: from functional, single spotlights; to mood-enhancing table or floor-lamps; to extravagant, multi-chandeliers.
